Communication for social mobilization

Enhancing competencies in development communication and linkage-building to facilitate decision-making, consensus-building, conflict management and social mobilization. (4 weeks)


Social communication in environmental impact assessment

Environmental impact assessment as a communication process between and among stakeholders; strategic information assessment method (SIAM); communication strategies to address the social soundness of a project. Each participant should bring case materials based on their individual experiences in EIA. (3 weeks)


Environmental conflict resolution

Conducting principled negotiations with entities environmentally affected by a development or industrial project or program. (3  weeks)


Communication in planning, management and evaluation for development projects

Principles and methods in development communication as applied to the planning, implementation and assessment of information, education and communication projects; includes topics on situation analysis, audience analysis, strategy development, message design, channel selection, project monitoring and evaluation and action planning. (2 weeks)


Social marketing for agriculture, health, nutrition, population and environment projects

Includes discussion of the elements and processes in social marketing, strategies useful in the planning, implementation and impact evaluations of various social marketing programs. (3 weeks)


Communication ethics and values for education and development

Discussion of belief system theories as applied to formal and non-formal education and development programs; integrating ethics and values in curriculum development and teaching. (2 weeks)


Organizational communication for managers

Addresses the importance of communication and team-building in organizations; effective use of different communication media to increase organizational productivity and enhancing staff morale; formal and informal network analyses as essential tools in improving organizational performance; techniques in linkage-building for organizational maintenance. (3 weeks)


Participatory communication

Discussion and critical analysis of participatory communication approaches and experiences; participatory message-making, problem-solving, decision-making and consensus-building. (2 weeks)


Participatory process documentation, monitoring and evaluation of development projects

Covers tools used in participatory process documentation, monitoring techniques and evaluation strategies to improve systematically the conduct of development projects; discusses  process documentation as an important feedback mechanism and as an essential component in project implementation; design, development, pretesting of forms/questionnaires used in monitoring and evaluation; guidelines in collecting baseline information. (2 weeks)


Effective extension-communication

Concepts and principles of communication and their application to extension work; overview of extension-communication media, also includes planning, implementing and evaluating extension-communication projects. (2 weeks)


Integrating gender concerns in communication and development

Discussion of tools for incorporating gender-based information into development program design, implementation and evaluation; allows exchange of ideas and experiences on gender-sensitive issues in development; importance of gender analysis in communication and development research. (2 weeks)


New communication technologies for effective program implementation

Techniques of using teleconferencing, data communication and information technology as tools in program operation, management, monitoring and evaluation. (2 weeks)


Communication games, structured learning experiences and simulation for teaching and training

Improving interpersonal skills and facilitation of group processes to enhance learning, use of games and simulation in teaching abstract concepts/ideas; application of the andragogic approach to teaching-learning. (1 week)


Development and utilization of educational communication materials for rural development

Planning, designing, producing, using and evaluating instructional graphic materials and displays, soundslide sets, video programs and puppetry for rural audiences; also includes basic skills in audio-visual design and writing, photography and audio-craft production. (4 weeks)


Audio visual aids planning and production

Principles, techniques and exercises in the design, production, presentation and evaluation of low-cost audiovisual materials for communication and education; also includes the production and use of indigenous media. (4 weeks)


Educational video production

Using small-format video(Super VHS, VHS, Hi-8, V-8, Beta) as educational communication tool; discussion of principles of videography and camera techniques; hands-on experience on basic video production. (3 weeks)


Video empowerment

Using small-format video (Super VHS, VHS, Hi-8, V-8, Beta) as an electronic mirror of communities; as a vehicle for community expression; as an unobtrusive documentation tool for environmental monitoring, abuse of authority, criminal violations, domestic violence and others. (3 weeks)


Advanced photography

Close-up and macro photography, slide duplication and reprocopy, corrective and creative filtration; photographic composition; flash and low-light photography. (2 weeks)


Broadcasting for development

Planning, writing, producing, broadcasting and evaluating radio programs for development projects; includes exercises on writing news articles, producing spot announcements and drama; hands-on experience on the use of the broadcast console. (4 weeks)


Development and production of institutional publications

Writing, editing, layouting and packaging newsletters, brochures, leaflets for institutional image-building; includes an overview of the printing process and clear and effective writing. (2 weeks)


Popularizing science and technology

Science and technology as specialized reporting areas; popular and civic science literacy; writing S & T news and features; radio documentary; videography; exhibits and demonstrations; information searching and evaluation; using computer-resident tools. (2 weeks)


Environmental reporting

Investigative, balanced and responsible for environmental awareness and education. (2 weeks)


Media relations

The philosophy of public information, understanding the mass media, packaging information, and designing agency media realation plans. (2 weeks)


Courseware writing for distance education

Learning principles relevant to distance mode; planning, writing and designing print-based courseware for distance learning. (3 weeks)


Communication research

Designing and conducting communication research from problem definition to analysis, interpretation and write-up of research report. (2 weeks)


Technical writing and editing

Technical writing as a special skill, formats (research report, scientific article, seminar paper, poster paper), data presentation (figures, tables, lists photographs, drawings); abstracting and indexing; stylebooks and references; revising and substantive editing; software tools; practical exercises. (3 weeks)


News and feature writing

Principles of clear and effective writing, news writing and news values, news story structure, types of feature writing, feature story writing. (2 weeks)


Extension publications preparation and production

Basic techniques and principles of layouting, headline and caption writing; an overview of the printing process; kinds of extension publications; writing, editing and proofreading; clear and effective writing. (2 weeks)


Fees

  • 2-week course: US$ 2,000/participant for a batch of not less than 4; $1,500/particiapnt for a batch of 5 or more.
  • 3-week course: $2,500/participant for a batch of not less than 4; $2,000/participant for a batch of 5 or more.
  • 4-week course: $3,500/participant for a batch of not less than 4; $3,000/participant for a batch of 5 or more.

For specially designed courses (those not in the list of regular courses and whose duration would depend on the requesting party), the course fee
is computed separately.

The fee covers payment for coordinator, resource persons and other personnel, supplies and materials, travel costs related to the course, including ferrying of participants from and to the airport, photos and materials reproduction. It does not cover the airtickets of participant from and to their country, their per diem and costs of lodging or accommodation, airport fees and taxes, and medical expenses. The sponsoring institution must cover these costs.
