Tidal swamp agriculture in Indonesia

Settled by transmigrants from Java and Bali, the tidal swamplands of Eastern Sumatra and West Kalimantan provide many challenges for farmers: daily and seasonal flooding under the influence of the tides, acid-sulphate soils, thick layers of peat, numerous pests and diseases, lack of labour, and poor marketing and infrastructure.

This set of 10 pocket-sized manuals is intended for extension workers in these areas. Written in Indonesian and illustrated with line drawings, they cover the following topics:

  • Agricultural mechanization (Pola pengembangan alat dan mesin pertanian di lahan pasang surut)
  • Chilli cultivation (Budi daya cabai di lahan pasang surut)
  • Combined chicken-fish raising (Budi daya terpadu ayam buras dan ikan (longyam) di lahan pasang surut)
  • Drum-type rice seeder (Alan tanam padi tebar langsung tipe drum)
  • Major pests and diseases of rice (Hama dan penyakit utama padi di lahan pasang surut)
  • Rats and their control (Hama tikus dan pengendaliannya di lahan pasang surut)
  • Rice cultivation (Budi daya padi sawah di lahan pasang surut) 97 kb
  • Soil and water management (Pengelolaan tanah dan air) 338 kb
  • Soybean cultivation (Budi daya kedelai di lahan pasang surut) 229 kb
  • Weed control (Pengendalian gulma di lahan pasang surut)

Set of 10 booklets. Published 1997 by the Integrated Swamps Development Project, Agency for Agricultural Research and Development, Indonesia.
