Tidal swamp agriculture in Indonesia
|
Settled by transmigrants from Java and Bali, the tidal swamplands of Eastern
Sumatra and West Kalimantan provide many challenges for farmers: daily and seasonal
flooding under the influence of the tides, acid-sulphate soils, thick layers of peat,
numerous pests and diseases, lack of labour, and poor marketing and infrastructure.
This set of 10 pocket-sized manuals is intended for extension workers in these
areas. Written in Indonesian and illustrated with line drawings, they cover the following
topics:
